Welcome to a promising new year for the Louisburg High School Wrestling team! Under the leadership of first-year head coach Bobby Bovaird, along with returning assistant coaches Chad White and Aaron Ziadeh, the Wildcats are looking to make some impacts throughout the season!
Last year, the Wildcats made huge strides throughout the season under the guidance of Coach Richard Fergola and his coaching staff. Louisburg finished 5th at 4A Regionals and 15th at 4A State, with Austin Hood winning the state championship at 119 lbs. and Cullen Hood placing 5th at 103 lbs. Graduate Derek Mathia, a two-time state qualifier and 30-match winner, came one match away from placing at 152 lbs. Both Hoods and Mathia were also LHS’s only Frontier League champions in 2011.
Returning to the mat this season will be a solid core of seniors. Austin Hood will be leading the pack as he looks to win his third state championship. Right behind him is Austin Caskey, Colton Rommel, and Brady Hudgins. Caskey was one match away from qualifying for the state tournament at 140 lbs. and Rommel won two matches at the regional tournament.
A solid group of juniors will also provide leadership for the Wildcats. State placer Cullen Hood returns, along with Konnor Cook, Kyle Edwards, Nathan Kueser, Curtis Lemke, Kyle McClellan, Anthony Schofield, and Austen Scott. Lemke was also one match away from qualifying for state.
Coach Bovaird is excited for this upcoming season for many reasons, most significantly the outstanding work ethic of the returning wrestlers. The Wildcats came on strong at the end of the 2010-11 season, and the squad will not be slowing things down as they look to improve upon last year’s successes and push Louisburg to the top as one of the area’s top teams.
