Caskey falls short of the individual gold, leads young squad at Tongie
Going into the 12-team Tonganoxie Invitational, the Wildcats were only taking a team of 7 wrestlers. Injuries and illnesses have definitely taken a toll on the squad, but our philosophy is “performance regardless.” No excuses on competition day – we field our best team, put our best efforts forward, and let the chips fall where they may. LHS finished the day in 7th place out of 12 teams. Tonganoxie took 1st, Shawnee Heights took 2nd, and Piper took 3rd.
Senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) stepped things up on Saturday, leading with a team-high 2nd place finish. He made short work of his first two opponents, pinning them both in the 1st period, but ran into a tough Tonganoxie opponent and lost a 4-10 decision. Caskey currently leads the team with 12 wins and 7 pins on the season. Making his varsity debut (and wrestling in just his 3rd meet ever) was freshman Zach Knox (120 lbs.). Knox, who is filling in for the injured Cullen Hood, now boasts a record of 3-1 and brought home a 3rd place finish. He pinned his first opponent and then won a barn-burner match by a score of 19-14 before running into the #2 seeded wrestler. A loss to that opponent put Knox in the 3rd place match, which he won in an exciting fashion! Down by 7 points with less than a minute to go, he hit a flurry of moves and found himself on top of his opponent and earned the fall with 30 seconds to go. Freshman Logan Glenn (106 lbs.) also earned a spot in the top-4 of his weight class, losing the bronze medal match to a Tonganoxie opponent. Glenn won a technical fall in the pool rounds before earning his 4th place medal.
Also competing for the Wildcats were freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.), sophomore Ben Powers (138 lbs.), and juniors Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) and Konnor Cook (285 lbs.). Powers earned two falls and won an exciting 14-10 decision to take 5th place. Lemke, wrestling in his first competition of the year after battling a recent concussion, won by fall and then by a 3-1 decision to take 5th place. Taking 6th place, Huber found himself on the wrong side of the bracket. Although he was 0-3 on the day, he had gave a great match to the eventual runner-up at his weight. Cook had some great moments Saturday, winning his first match by fall, but in his second match of the day he suffered a mild concussion and had to default out to 6th place.
The Wildcats will get to enjoy some much-needed time off these next few weeks. Injuries have been taking their toll on the squad, but this is the right time for them to happen – better now than in February! When the Wildcats return in January 2012, we’ll be traveling to Adrian, MO, for a double dual against Adrian and Prairie View. That Saturday, we host our annual Wildcat Wrestling Classic!
