Hood, McLellan lead ‘Cats to 9th place finish at Prairie View
If you want to bring home some team victories when you go into a dual tournament, you’ve got to take a full team. Unfortunately, placing high as a team wasn’t possible for the Wildcats at the Prairie View Duals. With a team of only 7 wrestlers, we took some knocks as we wrestled our way to a 9th place finish. We won more individual matches than we lost, however, bringing home an overall 15-10 record with head-to head matches.
The first dual of the day, we lost to Blue Valley Southwest 24-51, but we won 5 out of 7 matches. Against Ottawa, we lost by a team score of 15-61 and only won 3 of 7 matches. Against Andover, the score was 31-45 but we won 6 out of 7 matches. In our last dual in pool competition, we faced Shawnee Mission South and lost 30-60, again winning 5 out of 7 matches. Mathematically, it was highly unlikely that we could win a dual, giving up 42 points right off the bat, but in the 9th place match, we ran into a school with just as many opens as we had: Anderson County. Things worked out just right so that there were 3 weights where we were both open, we received 4 forfeits and they received 4 forfeits. That meant it came down to 3 head-to-head matches to determine the winner of the dual. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) wrestled first, getting pinned in the first period. Then senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) and junior Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) each came out and won by fall in the first period to secure the dual victory for the team!
Individually, two Wildcats were undefeated on the day: senior Austin Hood (126 lbs.) and McLellan. Hood notched 3 wins by fall, while McLellan had 2 pins. Freshman Austin Huber (113 lbs.) was 4-1, beginning the day with an exciting 9-7 overtime win, and Caskey was also 4-1 at 145 lbs., winning two close decisions along the way. Freshman Zach Knox picked up two pins at 120 lbs. Freshman Logan Glenn was 2-3 at 106 lbs. and junior Austen Scott, who earned a fall and a major decision at 132 lbs., was also 2-3.
This tournament essentially marks the half-way point of the season. There are only four more regular-season tournament weekends until the Regional Tournament will be upon us! On Friday, the Wildcats will head up to Blue Valley Northwest for the annual Husky Invitational.
