Hood remains undefeated, wins home tourney

The Wildcat Classic Wrestling Invitational is a tournament that has roots back to the early days of Louisburg wrestling. Coach Don Meek started the program in 1969 and decided to put on a home tournament the very next year. For many decades, this tradition had been carried on, and we’re proud to have continued with it. This year, ten teams gathered in the LHS gym, which was covered with four wrestling mats, to compete for the team and individual titles. Tonganoxie came away with 1st place, followed by Seaman in 2nd and Blue Valley West in 3rd. LHS finished in 8th place with three top-4 finishers.

Senior Austin Hood (126 lbs.) continues to lead the team as he went 4-0 to win our only individual championship. Hood notched pins in his first three matches and then won an excited match in an ultimate tie-breaker against his Lansing opponent. Hood and his opponent were tied 1-1 after three periods, and then after a scoreless overtime and matching each other escape for escape in the tiebreaker periods, it came down to a 30-second ultimate tiebreaker. If the bottom man escaped, he won the match, and if the top man rode him out, then he won. With 5 seconds left, Hood’s opponent nearly escaped, but Austin caught hold of his leg and held on with all he had to finish out the period. Hood remains undefeated at 16-0. Senior Austin Caskey walked away with a 3rd place finish at 145 lbs. Caskey lost a close decision to the eventual champion and then won a tight 6-5 match in the consolation finals to an opponent who was ranked in the top 6 in Class 5A. Freshman Zach Knox stepped up again to fill the shoes of Cullen Hood at 126 lbs. and he came away with a 4th place finish. Knox has a 5-5 record on varsity and has finished in the top-4 at two tournaments.

Freshmen Logan Glenn (106 lbs.) and Austin Huber (113 lbs.) both finished 5th in their weight classes, and juniors Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) and Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) both finished in 6th place. Juniors Austen Scott (132 lbs.) and Konnor Cook (285 lbs.) each earned a pin, but did not make it to the top-6. Another pair of juniors, Kyle Edwards at 138 lbs. and Greyson Honsinger at 182 lbs., filled in the varsity line-up for the Wildcats, but were winless on the day.

After a grueling start to the new year, the Wildcats are preparing for a dual tournament this upcoming weekend at Prairie View. We’ll see some familiar regional opponents, such as Prairie View and Anderson County, but we’ll also see some new teams. Let’s go Wildcats!
