Wildcats led by Hood and Caskey at Blue Valley Northwest!
Last Friday and Saturday, six Wildcat Wrestlers took to the mats in one of the toughest tournaments in the state of Kansas, the Blue Valley Northwest Husky Invitational! Louisburg was one of two 4A schools in a field full of 5A and 6A powerhouses. Manhattan took home the team trophy, followed by Lawrence, Newton, Bonner Springs, and Hutchinson.
At 126 lbs., senior Austin Hood again showed his dominance by notching two technical falls and a fall before facing Lawrence’s Hunter Harralson in the finals. This year, Hood had already defeated Harralson, the only wrestler to have beaten Hood last year, winning 9-1 at Eudora, and this time he was looking to better that performance. After a scoreless first period, Hood chose the bottom position and earned an escape and a takedown to take the lead. Harralson chose the down position in the third period, but Austin rode him out, earning nearfall toward the end of the match for a solid 5-0 decision. Senior Austin Caskey (145 lbs.) had an exciting tournament as well, finishing in 5th place. Caskey’s most exciting match came in the consolation quarterfinals where he was down 9-4 with 30 seconds left. With a master’s focus, he lost no time in hitting his go-to move, the headlock, to tie the match and send it into overtime where he quickly scored the winning takedown.
Juniors Kyle McLellan (220 lbs.) and Curtis Lemke (152 lbs.) came close to placing in the top-6 at this tough tournament. McLellan won two matches by fall, but lost to two tough individuals, both of whom are ranked in the top-6 in Class 6A. Lemke had a tough draw in the first round, losing to a state-ranked opponent from Shawnee Mission South, but bouncing back with a solid win against a Washington opponent. In the next round, he came up against a tough match with an opponent from Hutchinson and lost 10-3. Junior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) and sophomore Ben Powers (138 lbs.) also wrestled for the Wildcats. Both Scott and Powers were 0-2 this weekend.
Next week, we’ll be traveling to Baldwin for a new addition to our schedule, but we’ll see many familiar faces at the Baldwin Invitational Tournament. We expect to find lots of tough competition from the likes of Baldwin, Tonganoxie, Holton, Lansing, and Oak Park (Missouri).
