Fort Scott Duals

Knox goes undefeated, leads Wildcats at Fort Scott

December 1, 2012

Sophomore Zach Knox recorded 3 pins to lead the Wildcats in our first competition of the season at the 2012 Fort Scott Duals. The Wildcats faced off against five other opponents in a round-robin competition in which all teams go head-to-head in dual format. Louisburg faced three regional opponents and two other larger schools, going 1-4 in duals and taking 5th place as a team.

The weekend was filled with positives and negatives, and this sport is truly a roller-coaster ride throughout the season. Fielding a team with only four wrestlers with varsity experience, the Wildcats were able to fill 13 of the 14 weight classes. Not only were most of the team first-time varsity wrestlers, but eight of them were either freshmen or sophomores. Every LHS wrestler represented the team with pride and determination. Inexperience was our biggest disadvantage, as we lost to Fort Scott 49-30, Blue Valley Southwest 51-21, Anderson County 41-31, and Paola 36-30. Our sole dual victory came against Shawnee Mission West by a score of 42-33.

Three Wildcats ended the day with a .500 record or better: Knox was 3-0 at 120 / 126 lbs., sophomore Sean Dennis was 2-1 at 145 lbs., and freshman Jacob Bolton was 2-2 at 152 lbs. Knox recorded three pins, while Dennis and Bolton each earned two pins. Also recording pins were freshman Anders Vance (1-4 at 220 lbs.) and senior Kade Larson (2-3 at 285 lbs.). Sophomore Austin Huber (120 / 126 lbs.) won by major decision against his Anderson County opponent, senior Austen Scott (132 lbs.) won a high-scoring decision against his Anderson County opponent, and junior Ben Powers (138 lbs.) earned a decision against his Blue Valley Southwest opponent. Five other Wildcats, all of them either freshmen or first-year wrestlers, hit the mats for LHS on Saturday: freshman Adam Harris (0-4 at 106 lbs.), freshman Parker Cates (0-2 at 113 lbs.), senior Dylan York (0-5 at 160 lbs.), sophomore Brenton Wrigley (0-3 at 170 lbs.), and junior TJ McKiearnan (0-3 at 182 lbs.).

This upcoming weekend, the Wildcats will take on a hefty challenge at the 34th annual Eudora Tournament of Champions. Over twenty teams from 4A, 5A, and 6A will be competing at this tough two-day tournament. LHS will have the chance to square off against many state-ranked wrestlers.

2nd Annual Purple-White Scrimmage

White Team pulls away in 2nd annual intra-squad dual!

27 November, 2012

A new LHS wrestling tradition continued Tuesday evening as the Wildcats held their 2nd annual Purple-White Scrimmage, an intra-squad competition in which the top two wrestlers in each weight square off in a formal dual to see who will represent LHS at the varsity level. Thirty-three wrestlers competed in matches that were either varsity wrestle-offs, ranking matches, or exhibition matches. Although the White Team started off slowly, the wrestlers didn’t look back as they cruised to a 73-34 victory.

The scrimmage featured 8 varsity wrestle-off matches, 4 ranking matches, and 7 exhibition matches. The Louisburg Wildcats are returning 1 state qualifier in senior Cullen Hood, who has made three trips to state and placed 5th in state at 103 lbs. in 2011. Hood (126 lbs.) had no opponent for his challenge match, but he came away with a first-round pin in an exhibition match against fellow senior Austen Scott. At 120 lbs., sophomore Zach Knox won a 12-3 major decision and at 160 lbs., senior Dylan York won by default. The rest of the challenge matches were victories by pin: senior Austen Scott at 132 lbs., junior Ben Powers at 138 lbs., senior Kyle Edwards at 152 lbs., sophomore Brenton Wrigley at 170 lbs., freshman Kole McNatt at 195 lbs., and freshman Anders Vance at 220 lbs. Filling in the rest of the varsity line-up will be freshman Adam Harris at 106 lbs., freshman Parker Cates at 113 lbs., senior Curtis Lemke at 145 lbs., junior TJ McKiearnan at 182 lbs., and senior Kade Larson at 285 lbs.

Again this year, the Purple-White Scrimmage featured a group of Honorary Coaches. This year, we welcomed Coach Don Meek, LHS Athletic Hall-of-Famer Mike Meek, and LHS wrestling alum Greg Graham. Don Meek is credited with founding the Wildcat Wrestling program in 1969, when he was serving at athletics director for LHS. In the 1970-71 season, the Wildcats were undefeated in dual competition and had our first state champion. His son Mike Meek competed for long-time LHS coach Dee Graham and was a stand-out athlete in three sports. Greg Graham, son of Dee Graham, was a 4-time state qualifier for the Wildcats while wrestling for his father in the 1980s.

Winners of the varsity wrestle-offs will compete at the Ft. Scott Duals this weekend. The Wildcats will have 5 duals against a tough slate of teams including Ft. Scott, Blue Valley Southwest, Paola, Shawnee Mission West, and Anderson County. All other Wildcat Wrestlers will compete at the Blue Valley North JV tournament.
